Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you offer a printed version of the list?
A: No

Q: How often is an updated list released?
A: Once a year on May 1st, however the next version of the book list will be released on May 1st, 2020 (In 2019, Jenny Phillips will be focusing on selecting and republishing books for The Good and the Beautiful Library product line).

Q: When will the next update to the list be released?
A: May 1st, 2020.

Q: Do you have a copy of the list with just the titles and authors (without the images and reviews)?
A: Yes. You can purchase the download here for $1. The download is a zip file that includes an Excel file and a PDF document. This is a 10-page document. We highly recommend that you use this in conjunction with the full list. You will want to read through the reviews and notes for each book before choosing to read it. This list is for those who don’t want to print out the 100+ page full document when going to the library, etc.

Q: Why is there a charge for the list?
A: #1) Thousands of hours and thousands of dollars have gone into creating this 117-page document. A small charge helps cover some of the costs of purchasing and screening books. On average, we go through 7-8 books we cannot recommend for each book we can recommend, meaning we purchase and screen over 400 books each year, costing thousands of dollars. #2) We feel that if people have to buy the list, even for a very small fee, they will be more likely to value it and use it.

Q: Is there a list of books that did not make the list with an explanation of why?
A: Yes, but it is not an officially published list. Because Jenny does not include any books on her list that contain any profanity or any inappropriate behavior made to look acceptable, many commonly read books did not make the book list. Jenny likes to keep things positive and focus on the “good” list. She also does not expect everyone to have the same standards as she does or claim that her standards are right or wrong–they are simply her own standards.
