I can not say enough good things about this curriculum. I’ve been homeschooling for a decade and have used a LOT of curriculum. I’ve never found anything that fills every need and gap like this one does. Even more importantly, my kids love to do it every day! It’s turning homeschool from a chore to a joy again.” ~Amy D. The following high school language arts & literature courses are currently being developed, and the first courses (High School 1 and High School Honors 1) will be released in June, 2018.

High School 1   |  High School 2  |  High School 3  |  High School 4

Honors High School 1   |  Honors High School 2  |  Honors High School 3  |  Honors High School 4

  • All courses combine reading, writing, literature, geography, art appreciation/art history, art instruction, vocabulary, grammar, usage, punctuation, and spelling. (Note: Spelling is included in the standard path only.)
  • Each course will include a course book, a course companion (which includes an answer key for the course book and quizzes), readers with full-length books, and online videos. In addition, each course will integrate 2-3 carefully selected books that must be purchased.
  • The courses are designed to be mainly self-directed by the student, but parents can be as involved as they would like. Parents should administer and correct a quiz for each unit to check the child’s progress.
  • These faith-based courses place a strong emphasis on writing, editing, high moral character, enjoyment of learning, and literature of high literary and moral value.
  • There are 32 units in each course (one for each school week, minus 4 weeks to account for vacation and sickness). Each unit is designed to take about 4.75 hours for a total of 150 hours.

There are two paths for high school.

The standard path (High School 1, 2, 3, and 4) is less challenging than the honors courses, but still contains advanced learning and literature of high moral and literary value. The standard path is mainly designed for students who have not completed the lower level The Good & the Beautiful courses, which are advanced, or who are not ready for or interested in advanced literature or grammar. The standard high school classes do not have to be taken in order. However, in order to receive all the learning needed in high school, all four levels should be completed.

The honors path (Honors High School 1, 2, 3, and 4) is the natural path after Level 7, meaning students who successfully complete the Level 7 course are ready for Honors High School 1. (Standard High School 1 is about the same level as Level 7.)

FAQs

Q: Do both paths cover all the standards needed for high school?
A: These courses do not follow common core standards. However, not only are all the truthful and important common core standards generally covered in these courses, but the courses also go well above and beyond common core standards.

Q: Are accredited classes offered?
A: No.

Q: How much geography and art history is included?
A: Geography and art history is covered thoroughly in the courses so that no supplemental courses are needed in these subjects.

Q: How much art instruction is included?
A: Only basic art instruction is included and is designed only to expose students to the basic principles of a variety of art mediums and techniques. Not all units include art instruction. Those who are serious about art will want to supplement with additional art instruction courses.

Q. How much will the courses cost?
A: $35 for a PDF download or $89.99 or less for a physical course set, which includes the readers, online video instruction, and high-quality, full-color course book packed with beautiful art. (Really? Yes! Taking the normal profit margin would make the price $80-$150 for a download or $110-$175 for a physical course set. Our mission is to make a “good and beautiful” education available to as many children as possible by keeping our prices extremely low.)

Q: Do the standard and honors courses use the same literature?
A: No. The literature in the honors courses is more challenging. If honors students also want to read the literature included in the standard courses, which is highly recommended, they can simply buy and read the readers for the standards courses.

Q: If a child has already completed some high school courses with other curriculum, where would you place them, and do they still need to do all four high school courses with The Good & the Beautiful?
A: If a child has taken previous high school courses, the child could start with any of the standard high school courses: 1, 2, 3, or 4. They be taken in any order, but if the child is only going to take two of the four high school courses, she should take High School 1 and High School 2 Or High School 3 and High School 4. The basics of grammar and punctuation are covered in each high school course. For example, the parts of speech, dependent and independent clauses, and run-on sentences are covered in each course. More advanced grammar principles are spread between the courses, with Year 1 and Year 3 containing the same principles and Year 2 and 4 containing the same principles. For example, infinitive clauses are taught in Year 1 and Year 3 and participial phrases are taught in Year 2 and 4. If children only takes High School 1 and 2 OR High School 3 and 4, they will learn all of the grammar and punctuation principles in our high school courses. If they take all four courses, they will go through all of the principles twice, with different exercises, etc. for a great review. The same is true with writing instruction. If only High School 1 and 2 are taken, all writing principles are covered. High School 3 and 4 will review the same writing principles with different assignments, for a great review.

Q: If a child finished Level 7 before age 14, is it appropriate to continue to the honors path?
A: Yes, if a child finishes Level 7 before age 14, he should be ready for the honors path. All reading material in the high school courses is completely wholesome and appropriate for any age. Children younger than 14 may need to go through the honors courses more slowly, taking longer than a year to complete the course if needed. The writing projects will likely be the biggest challenge for younger students.

Q: What if my child starts the high school courses early? What will they do when they finish?
A: As soon as we finish the high school courses, we will be creating “High School Language Arts Unit Studies.” These studies will focus around a single exemplary author and 1-3 of his or her books, allowing the child to study the author and book deeply as they also use the book to complete writing assignments and review grammar and punctuation principles. The LA unit studies do not include art or geography and can be taken by those who completed the standard or honors high school path. Each unit study varies in length from 2-4 months. It is suggested that the child be allowed to choose the unit studies he or she would like to complete. We will be releasing enough unit studies to cover two school years. These unit studies can be taken at any time during high school, but it is very strongly suggested that a child first finish at least two high school courses: year 1 and 3 or year 2 and 4.
